Prologue: The Meeting
I walked towards the field, slowly taking in my surroundings. The Dollar Saver and the Home Building Store only had dim outside lighting; otherwise it was black. The field was nothing special, it was protection from the road with its tall grass and smell of dirt. Being that it seemed as if everything was closed and the town was shut down there wasn't many cars out. The gas station was on the other side of it, I knew I should have stopped for gas at lunch. I was bombarded after lunch break by Robyn; of course she was excited and had so much to tell me. I got my gas can and began to walk. I can't believe I let Robyn talk me into going out with her after work, she knows I don't do that but she was right I do need a life. "I heard they were having a party in Graze; you know the little town about ten minutes from here to the South?" she rambled on quickly and I was barely keeping up, but I had heard of the place and their infamous parties. I wasn't into that scene anymore, I got tired of trying to fit in.  I bundled up in my sweater and walked through the field the rest of the night playing through my head, she wore me down by my last break. It wasn't as long of a walk as I thought. I made it to the lot in less than 5 minutes, you could see the lights from the other side and it really made the place look less creepy. The sound of the lights being turned off stopped me in my tracks, I hurriedly ran to the door before it was locked. "Sir, please let me fill up my can before you close I ran out of gas," I frantically stated through the glass at the man's round face. He looked at me slowly from head to toe, "I shut the registers down do you have cash?" He questioned apologetically. I nodded quickly and pulled out the crisp new five from the bank. He cracked the door enough to take the bill before locking it quickly and running behind the counter and turning on the pump right in front of the door. I shouted my thanks and ran to fill the can. I saw him return to the door to watch me as I pumped the last few drops before he unlocked the door and exited. "Ma'am sure you going to be alright?" He asked heading to his car on the side of the building. "I am, on the other side of the field, it only takes a few minutes." I began to walk away. "That's all the time they need pretty miss, you be careful." the coldness in his voice giving me chills I dared not to show. I walked away feeling the cold tone of his voice to my bones. Walking through the field again I noticed the grass was higher than I thought at first, it was darker than I thought. I wanted nothing more than to get to my car and leave, Robyn owed me big time. I felt in my pocket for my cell phone that wasn't there, a car passing by made me jump and begin to run. I wondered, slightly how I ran through a soggy field in heels but I needed to get out. I approached the silver 2016 Nissan with its rims and dark tint cautiously, waiting for it to start and drive off without me. As I reached the tank, a dark man of small stature and build wearing a tattered tee shirt and masked stepped from around it. I screamed as he smiled his lopsided smile and walked attentively in my direction. His teeth missing and discolored held in blacked gums with a white film over them, showing themselves in the dim light. I watched as he made his way to me slowly, in too big boots and dirty jeans, his smell was offensive to say the least and I knew I had to get away. I stepped back and lowered myself from my now dirty heels and stood on the cold pavement meeting his sleepy gaze. He began to walk faster in my direction as I began to swing the gas can at him and scream. I dodged him the first time and put the can on the ground. I sprinted to my car as fast as I could before almost falling trying to unlock the door. I heard the plopping of the boots as he came behind me and the screeching of tires, I turned around to see a white 2007 Tahoe to the rescue. I turned around when I heard the deep voice yell out, "Kori what in the hell are you doing? I'm thinking someone else was over here trying to do some illegal s**t and its you, Kori apologize and go home before I rearrange those nasty teeth." The car door slammed as I jumped in and locked the door, forgetting the gas can, Kori approached and stopped short of being able to reach out and touch my window, his slow drawl and whispering voice made it hard to understand anything beyond I'm sorry. He left dragging his big boots and too big dirty jeans through the field I had vacated earlier. "Ma'am, he didn't mean anything," I heard from the back end of my vehicle as my hero put the gas in there himself. When he was done," would you pop your trunk I'm sure you don't want gas on those nice seats." I smiled even though he couldn't see me. I crank my car and exited to get my heels although I knew they where trash. "I already put them in the trunk Miss...," he trailed off waiting for an answer. "Keera, my name is Keera and yours?" I asked giving my caramel face and pink lips a quizzical look. "I'm Alijia, Alijah MaGorie and the pleasure is all mine. I hope he didn't scare you, he is harmless." I smiled again. "Thank you, I mean for saving me." I stated almost whispering. He got back into his vehicle throwing over his shoulder, "I hope to see you again Keera." I smiled turning into my own vehicle as I stated, "I am sure you will." Immediately I take off towards The Coyote. The little tin building on the outskirts of this small town. It was painted a loud yellow, with a disgusting attempt at a coyote that looked like a burned dog. After turning my engine off and staring at the crowd of people, I get out and ramble in my trunk for my spare heels and some wipes to rid my caramel legs of the dark mud splatter. Of the entire incident Brian stood firmly out in my mind. Walking towards the bathroom signs, I scan the crowd again when she stood out. Robyn Brant stood five foot six on her feet but in her heels she easily stood six foot. Her red hair in a mess of curls that framed her heart shaped face perfectly and stood out against her yellow skin. Her makeup flawless that made her honey eyes and full red lips pop. Her red dress hugged her hourglass figure to the letter. Her red and gold accessories brought her to near perfection. When she saw me she immediately went into clean up mode by taking me to her car, a wardrobe in wheels. "Just in case!" She always insisted. She dressed me in black and gold from head to toe, freshened my make up and pulled my long curls off my neck. "See how pretty you are?" "Stop hiding girl!" her statement took me aback. I looked at my reflection in the tint of a nearby car and smiled brightly. "Yes, its not sweats but it'll do for tonight." She pulled me to the bathroom for a better look at myself and "to fix herself" cause a lady has always got to look fresh. We were in there ten minutes before she decided her lips were red enough. Laughing we walked into the club and straight to the bar. While standing at the bar, I began chatting with the owner, Mayes, a tall and lanky man with caramel skin and gray eyes. He was kind. He helped me turn down many dances while watching Robyn dance like her life depended on it. Every dance she took the men ordered us another round. While trying to catch a drunk Robyn, someone bumped into my small frame almost knocking us over. I was caught from behind and wrapped in a strong embrace to a slim muscular frame, the scent of Polo Black assaulting my senses mixing with the warm minty breath and a deep voice apologizing. I allow this familiarity to guide us to a booth in the back weaving through the hot and sweaty bodies. I push Robyn inside and he orders us water while looking into the eyes of Alijah MaGorie. We talk and laugh until the lights come on and me walk me and a staggering Robyn to my car. I push Robyn into the backseat and say thank you to Brian. "I had a great time tonight." I told him. "Are you ok to drive? how far do you have to go?" His questions took me by surprise. "Only fifteen minutes, I'll be fine." Here is my number, call me when you make it home. We talked all night, I learned so much about him. I woke up to the rooster and snoring in my ear. I didn't take my Bluetooth out and he was still there sleeping. I hung up the phone feeling groggy. Actually, hung over; I clearly remembered many of my drinks being exchanged for water except three and it was juice that Mayes gave me. My head and stomach ached, more so I looked like warmed over death. My sandy brown hair wild on my head, make up running down my face and memories flooding my pounding head. " I made it home safely, I thank you." Was the first thing I said when the low voice on the other end finally answered. "You're welcome lil mama, I know you are tired but do you mind if we talk some?" This came as a shock. This man can have anyone he wanted and still here he is on my phone. My heart leapt. "Well, that's fine tell me about yourself. I mean besides the obvious." His chuckle became infectious and I couldn't help but smile myself. He told me about his family, his children, a little on his failed marriage to their mother. He told me about his work and obsession with clothes and shoes. I told him little. My family, losing my father, work, my favorite color. We talked about movies, music, and books. We talked about what subjects we liked in school and yet I still kept him at bay. " I can tell you got your wall up, let me in." I wasn't surprised but I couldn't answer. I feared he would hurt me. I would later find out that I was right. After a much needed cup of hot steamy jet black Joe, the shower beacons and I oblige. The hot water soothing the aches and pains that accumulated over the last 12 hours. I washed my face and what felt like worry. Before I could dry, the bathroom door burst open and Robyn stumbled in in her loud fashion awakening my lightly thumping temples and her own exploding ones. "Ahhh," she sighed holding her hands to her head. "I'm hungry come cook " the usual when she's drunk at my house. "Shower, get some clothes on and ill be done; now get out I don't need you in my whooha," was my response as she made her way down the hall to the guest bath and what I assume is her "room". After getting myself together and realizing it was after lunch, I made my way to the kitchen for grilled chicken sandwiches and home fries. I looked up at Robyn sliding in her fuzzy house shoes and shorts up the hallway. "I can't believe you made it," I laughed. "Shut up and feed me you demon," she responded. "What happened last night and who was that guy?" Her question caught me almost unprepared but when she grabbed my phone from the table I almost lost my breath. "Omg, not him she groaned. Please not him Kerra. I looked at her puzzled. "What's wrong with him? He seemed like a nice enough guy." It came out defensively. The look she gave me would have been priceless if she hadn't said what she said. " He is not a good person, he uses women and throws them away he just want s*x and that is it." She looked at me seriously but with her brown eyes pleading with me to listen to her this one time. I couldn't take my eyes from hers. "Tell me everything you know," I told her while putting my phone on the counter with the recorder on. She has known him for years, since before his marriage which was a total sham by the way. He always just wanted s*x under the guise of "friendship" or a "relationship". He never would tell the truth no matter how he was caught. He lied about everything; he was a fake man. I understood her concerns, I watched as she got animated through her speech. His women was never the nice and quiet type. Skanks as she would say. I paced and listened I did not want to be bothered with him anymore. Yet something in me waited for his call. How could I not answer, its not like I am getting much attention from anyone else. I mean what harm could it do to just have s*x with someone. Eventually she stopped her rant to look at me and to tell me that it would do me no good to just have him as a s*x partner because it would escalate at his speed and he would make you feel bad about it. "I am telling you Kerra, let him be," her tone now comforting and warming," he is not what he say he is." I looked at her wondering if she could be wrong, but I thought it better to investigate myself. How would I get to Graze and talk to people when I don't know anyone. There was another party going on, I didn't tell her but I knew I would go. I went into my room and searched my closet for something that would make me stand out but blend in. I settled on my tight yellow sweater that hugged my curves and thinned my waist, my dark blue flare leg pants that fit my body like I could have been the model they were made for, and my black pointed, cowboy booties, I wore my hair in a high bun with a few strands dangling around my face and neck. I did a light coating of make up that I made sure accentuated my eyes and grabbed my purse and keys. "Come on so I can take you to your car," I yelled as I was walking out the door, I needed to talk to Mayes, he knew. Alijah's POV: Sitting in the cut between Dollar Saver and Home Building Store, I was waiting for Alexia to call me back with her location so we can "chill". I have been working her over for months, good morning texts and calls. Frequent calls throughout the day. I love yous and late night conversations. She ate it up, I was doing everything that her man was not. I was there when he wasn't; checking on her and making sure that she was alright on the highway to work. I acted like I loved that girl more than her man and finally she was going to be all mine. I somehow prayed on these women. Got them to love me and when I got what I wanted the mask came off but it was too late then. Watching them love me when I knew I couldn't love them was easier than I thought after all the years I had been killing my soul to get to this point. I was just hoping that I played this last week right. I watched a car speed into the parking lot and then just shut off and stop. I couldn't help but watch; this was Graze, I couldn't be caught dead in the middle of the night helping anyone and the streets not know why they were here. I would be dead. I rolled the window down just a touch and listened to a soft voice complain about not getting gas and some friend that had her going to a party. She was angry and thick. Her silhouette, was a coke bottle and the heels helped her out in the height department. She pulled on a sweater and pulled it close to her frame and walked swiftly towards the field with her gas can. She obviously has heart to be walking alone in this town with a gas can. I had to have her. I watched until Alexia called me in the middle of my plan to get her. I was irritated with her and wanted her but not right then, not at this moment. I was about 8 and she should have been texted me but my other women kept me occupied but not like her. I wanted her and something in me told me I needed her. I watched her until I couldn't see her in the tall dark grass and went to meet Alexia at my house. She walked in my apartment and scanned the small kitchen and living room combo and looked at my spare furniture. I think she was looking for evidence of a woman having been here but there was nothing to see, I keep a clean house and one to where any woman can come and go as they please with knowing and not knowing that someone had been here. I run a clean operation for the most part. "Do you have cable?" she asked in a tone that stated she wasn't impressed. "No, I don't," I sneered between my teeth, "I have Wi-Fi, Netflix, and Hulu thought." I hate stuck up women, I am going to have my way with her and ghost her. To let her know that she is not special. "Do you have food?" she asked again like she was better than me. "Yes, I have food are you going to cook? It is 8 pm and I would rather not be washing dishes at this time of night. I have snacks in the cabinets, I just don't have anything other than water to drink." I showed her where everything was at. Living in Graze the stores knew to clothes at 7 if they wanted to keep their businesses, the only things that was open was HIS spots. They never closed; just swapped out the workers. I hated him for that. I hated this place. I lived by my own rules. I looked at my watch to see that ten minutes had passed and I was going to be late to play hero, so I told Alexia to stay put while I went to get sodas and juice. I knew she loved juice she told me so much. I hopped back in my truck and took off towards the laundry mat and I went down the side alley to see if she had made it back yet. Kori was in place just as she was making it to her car. I watched a little while longer; she was a fighter. I watched as she stepped out of her heels and swung the gas can, when she put it down she started running to her car ready to get in it. I know if she could have she would have ran him down; I know she got heart. I need her on my team. Kori started towards her, I knew he was harmless but she didn't know that. I gunned my truck around the corner and yelled at Kori, he stopped and then went to apologize just like I told him and told him to meet me at his old rundown house. After playing hero and seeing that was what she wanted and liked I knew I had her. She was already blushing and getting hot in the collar I could tell by how she was smiling. I loved looking at her. That caramel skin, those full pink lips that she simply put lip gloss on. That small frame carrying all the goods in the right places. I loved looking at her. I could tell she was feisty by listening to her talk. I could here it in her voice. She was driving me and I didn't care where. I heard her talking about The Coyote, the guys out there would eat her alive if I didn't do something, I paid Kori and then I went back to my house. I gave Alexis the juices and drinks I kept stored in the trunk, in a cooler and made sure that I kept it kosher with her. I wanted her to stick around, I told her to stay the night but I got other plans and had my mind set on Keera. She was sure she wasn't going to see me again but I knew she would. I romanced Alexis, we showered together, I rubbed her body down then she wanted more, I satisfied her and left her sleep on the couch while I went to catch a moth. When I pulled up to the club her Nissan was parked in the back of the lot, and I knew then for sure I would get her. I looked around and hoped to catch her by herself. I began to walk in the direction of the club and caught sight of her coming out of the bathroom with a fine red bone, I didn't want to be bothered with her she looked like she had a mouth, attitude and was used to getting her way. I didn't like those types, the ones that wanted expensive stuff all the time. The ones that wanted more than they were worth. I followed them in and watched them at the bar for a while. After I saw the play, I walked to the back of the club and got a booth where I could see them clearly. Keera wasn't going to dance, she would hold the bar down and drink, although not that much. I saw her switch many drinks to water when her friend wasn't watching. I took a stroll to the bartender and made her a drink myself, nothing drugged but she wouldn't tell that alcohol was in it. I wanted her tongue loose so I could soak up the overflow. I watched her friend dance all over the club. I loved her enthusiasm,, her charisma but I wouldn't touch her. She was bad for business and business was good. I watched her for some time; not talking to anyone just sitting there watching her friend and laughing. She didn't say anything much to anyone other than the bartender. I couldn't believe that he wasn't being fresh with her. She seems like the type to kill any advances, in any direction, from anyone. I like her; she is going to be a challenge. Her friend was drunk and she was trying to help her. I watched her struggle with the bigger girl for a little while until I walked over and bumped into them. After catching them, I guided them to my seat and talked sweetly and gently to her. I began molding her at that table. She only talked about the basic stuff, she only talked about the things that I already knew about so many others. She threw me the generics, I couldn't believe that she was pulling a me on me. I walked them to her car and we exchanged numbers, I thought this was a sign that I had her in my pocket. I walked in my house to find that Alexis had woken up and left, I got what I wanted so it didn't matter. She will call in a couple of days to yell at me and I am going to make her think that I care. She will be back and then I can use her as I please. I win. I talked to Keera when she got home and showered. I only ended up talking to her about me and she still only gave the basics. I completely opened up and she gave nothing. I fell asleep with her on the phone something that I have not done since high school. I don't know what I was thinking. I woke up to twenty missed calls and even more text messages; had I slept all day. I looked at the phone and saw that most of them was from Alexis. Most of her text messages where about how I wasn't worth the energy she was putting into looking for the answers but she deserved an explanation. "Man up and be  honest, I will respect you more." was what one of them said. I didn't delete them but I didn't respond. I made my way into the small bathroom and began my routine. Pee, bath (which included washing my face), brushing my teeth and my beard before oiling every part of my body and putting on fragrance. My phone rang and I stopped to look at it; Mom plastered across the screen with a picture of her on it. I didn't want to talk to her but if I didn't answer she would come over. " Mom," I said almost happily. I loved her but she couldn't stay out of my business as if I really wanted her to. Queenie MaGorie was more to me than any other woman. I couldn't stand the way she looked at me when I disappointed her. I hated the lectures even more. I wanted nothing more than to be the son that she wanted but I couldn't be that any more. I was scorned and hurting and I would have my revenge on any women that I could get; and that was a lot. My mom stood five foot flat, high yellow, hazel eyes, and a temper. She was always my friend and nothing more. She uphold me in my wrong to others but tear me a new one with every chance she get. I hated it but I loved her. "Alijah Koryn MaGorie, what have you been doing all day?" her voice shrill and demanding. I roll my eyes before giving a loud exaggerated sigh, "Ma what you talking about, I been sleep." "That girl been driving passed my house every five minutes and sent her lil ugly cousin to see if you were here. I told them not to play with me and sent Princess to have a "talk" with them." her anger at the top of the conversation now. "get rid of her or we will, don't have these skanks messing with my business." I couldn't help but sigh and look at the phone, she sent princess that means that poor Layna was in the hospital and the only cousin I could think of stupid enough to do her dirty work was Wanda, and Princess didn't care. My sister was five foot eight, slim but thick, and strong like our daddy. Her temper was a mixture of them both and she could flip in  matter of seconds. She had the tone to rival a Hershey bar and the eyes like mine green and grey. She had a mouth and being that she was from Graze she was from the streets and the country. She could cook you a Sunday dinner and fight at the same time. I couldn't understand how she did hair Monday through Friday and cooked Saturday and Sunday while being mama's hound. "Mama I been sleep, I haven't talked to her and I haven't seen her in days. Every time I talk to her she busy so  stopped calling. I know she doing other stuff but I can't control her," I said in one long breath trying to rush her off the phone" I don't know what she is doing." I was talking to Layna, deep she was supposed to be my main chick but she turned out to be a crazy stalker. I just left her alone. He red brown skin and red brown hair made it easy for me to want her not to mention she was stacked like a brick house. I wondered how she managed but then found out she was one of those stuck up and expensive chicks. "Get her off my block, my people getting nervous," she yelled before hanging up the phone. I thought maybe Princess didn't hurt her too bad but I couldn't say with Layna, she was so crazy. I decided to wear my blue today, blue always meant that I was on business so not to bother me otherwise, and my business for today was my women. Get them in check and make sure that they knew their places. Each one had a role and they all shared one; to satisfy me. I grinned at myself in my blue and white Colts hat, and the Andrew Luck jersey to match, flowing to my blue Levis pants and my blue and white Jordan number twelves. My signature smell of Polo Black was adorning me through  my house and out the door. It was time for me to get some things straight today.
