Chapter 1 ( New Home )
"Amelia Folks?" a woman's voice reached my ears. "Yes, I'm here." I got up from my chair and turned my eyes towards the woman sitting behind the desk. I looked around before taking the first step towards the reception desk. I was surrounded by a cosy environment, with light cream floors, light green walls and white ceilings. A few chairs were lined up near me and formed a small waiting room. My gaze went to the girl with pale yellow hair and a name tag that read “Rebecca” pinned to her suit. I pulled up a chair, sitting down comfortably at the table. Rebecca's dark brown eyes shifted towards me, and a few small wrinkles appeared on her forehead. When I realised what she wanted, I pulled my wallet with the ID card out of my purse. I slid it towards her to prove my identity and she took the card with her pink nails. Her eyes went to the computer and fingers were soon running over the computer keyboard. My heart trembled a little just out of joy, or fear. I can't believe I finally got into my dream college. Of course, it took a high score, but I finally made it. All of my hard work has paid off and my dreams are finally coming true. "Sign these documents by tomorrow. A special guest will come to your house to collect them." Rebeca pushed a few pages in my direction. "Of course, I'll do it." I put the pages back in my bag, waiting for further instructions. "The house number is three hundred and five. Have fun getting settled in, Miss Folks." Rebeca slid my ID card back to me with the key to the house, a white-toothed smile shining on the girl's face. "Thank you." I smiled, sinking the ID card and house key deep into the bottom of my handbag. I pushed myself up from the chair and headed straight for the exit. I kept repeating three hundred and five in my head, not wanting to forget my house number in this prestigious college. They can afford to give their students a house to live in. Of course, I won't be living there alone, but I could feel my hands starting to shake with excitement and happiness as I turned to leave. I touched the door handle, finally leaving the waiting room into a narrow, bright corridor that leads to the exit of the reception building. I changed glances with a few students who looked a little younger than me and they silently nodded their heads pleasantly. Another door opened wide, and I was finally able to breathe in the fresh, cool autumn air. Although the clouds in the sky did not bode well, a smile shone on my face. I was headed straight for the car park when I felt my phone vibrating in my handbag, and thought it must be Mum. I promised to call her when I moved into my house. Of course, she's excited and impatient to hear from me, particularly since she thinks it's all happening so fast. I pulled out the phone, swiped on the screen and put it to my ear. "Yes, Mum?" I walked along with the grey tiles towards the car park. "Sweetheart, how are you? How was your trip? Are you tired? Have you settled in your house yet?" Mum's worried voice was full of questions. "Mum, I've already checked in. I'm on my way to the car now. It seems that the student housing area is a little further away from the college." With my free hand, I took the car keys out of my bag. My eyes went to the dark red Audi car. It's not very luxurious, of course, but it's my dad's college graduation present. He is the best and most sincere man I know. I pressed the unlock button, and the lights flickered to signal that the car had unlocked. "Drive safely, darling. Please be sure to call me when you're settled into the house." Mum's voice sounds happy but I know she isn’t thrilled with the idea of me attending this college on the other side of the state. Now I just need to get used to this big city. "Don't worry, Mum. I'll be sure to call." I smiled, then ended the phone call as I was getting into my vehicle. I looked out of the car window and I couldn’t contain the broad smile that appeared on my face. My eyes rested on a large three-story building. Well, perhaps big is a bit of an understatement - it's enormous - the prestigious Barewood College of Arts. I couldn’t help but stare in awe at the vast white building that looks like a palace - a light-tiled walkway led to the main entrance, and a large, stylish door invited you in. A beautifully decorated field was in front of the college, with all kinds of flowers already wilted by the cool autumn air. The impressive trees are covered in a variety of autumn colours. A little to the left, I could see the small reception building from which I had just escaped. I have not been inside the main building yet since the first days of school are a few days away. I'm glad I was able to leave home early and get here with enough time to get settled. I put my keys in the ignition, turning it clockwise slightly. The car soon started loudly. I drove carefully out of the parking lot, fortunately knowing which direction to go. The road I took to get to this building had a big sign that said student housing, leading to a separate area for students of this college. I still can't believe that there are so many new things waiting for me at this college. I drove through the city streets at my usual speed, turning left at the traffic light. My eyes immediately went to look at the number of each of the houses. I wanted to find my house as soon as possible. This long journey has indeed exhausted my body, and the day is just beginning. My eyes stopped at the first house of the street and flicked towards the number that read fifty-three on the front of the house. I thought that somewhere at the end of this long street should be my house. I increased my speed a little to reach my new home faster. I started to pay attention to my surroundings and saw some young students chatting in front of every other house. Others were dragging big suitcases out of their cars to start their moving-in mission. Some of them walked along the pavement, trying to find out as much as possible about the new place they were living in. Finally, my eyes turned towards the three hundred and fifth house. I carefully parked my car on the pavement in front of it. I gazed at the house where I will live for the next three years and I felt my jaw suddenly drop. A large white two-story house stood before me. The relatively large windows demonstrated luxury, but the inside was hidden behind a crimson curtain. Surprisingly, I couldn’t see a single person or a car in the vicinity. I hope I wouldn't be living in this large house all alone, that would be wasteful and a bit creepy. As I walked closer, my eyes flickered to the terrace that has a few chairs set up in front of the house. Out of the corner of my eye, I caught a glimpse of what appeared to be a courtyard around the back. I became increasingly excited to explore the house as I wanted to see everything as soon as possible. I got out of the car and then knocked on the door. There was no answer except for the cold autumn wind that blew in, making my skin crawl. Maybe it was stupid to wear a dress, but I wanted to look special on this day. It was like my own little celebration - moving in day. I turned and headed back to my car, eager to get my bags and unpack. I opened the boot of the car wide and took out my two large suitcases. I closed the door, then locked the vehicle. Grabbing the handles of both suitcases, I walked along the path towards my new home. I climbed up the terrace steps and took the key from my handbag, quickly attaching it to the car keys, not wanting to lose it. The keys jingled as I placed it in the lock. Turning it slowly, I stopped after hearing a slight click, and I pushed on the door handle. As the door opened, a large living room appeared before my eyes. I couldn't believe how impressive the design of the house is. Three large sofas were in the middle of the living room with a small glass table in the centre. On the left wall is a large cabinet and on top of it is a television. Underneath each sofa was a soft crimson carpet that matches the curtains perfectly. To the left was a wide wooden staircase leading to the second-floor bedrooms. I stepped inside, dragging the two suitcases behind me. I closed the door, not wanting to let the cool autumn air in. At the very end of the room was the kitchen, which connected to the living room. A large white refrigerator was against the wall and a bar with four high chairs stood in a small hall in the kitchen area. A little to the left of that is a small wooden door, probably leading to the inner part of the house. Deciding that it was enough looking around, I headed straight for the staircase that led to the second floor. After precisely ten steps, four doors met my eyes, all located next to each other. One of them led to the bathroom, the other to bedrooms. Not wanting to do a lot of snooping, although I have that option, I opened the first door that led to a bedroom. A cozy dark brown double bedroom greeted my eyes. The first thing that caught my eye was the large window overlooking the street. The champagne-coloured curtains fell beautifully, giving the room a luxurious feel. A light brown carpet is tucked under each bed and comes out just enough that it reaches out to the spot where you place your feet when you get out of bed in the morning. Slightly further down, two rather large chests of drawers are visible. A white lamp shone on each of the bedside cabinets. Off to one corner there’s a potted flower, and although I have no idea what kind of plant it is, it looks beautiful. I took off my shoes, not wanting to make the light floor dirty, and I pulled my suitcases up to one of the chest of drawers. With a light movement, I took off my soft brown coat and threw it on the bed, then returned to the dresser. I knelt on the floor and started unpacking my clothes. I hope this chest of drawers is bigger than it looks or it won't fit all my clothes. I looked at the handbag that was next to my coat on the bed and in one easy motion, I opened it, then pulled out my phone. I probably need to call my mum, after all, I promised. I quickly dialed Mum's number and put the phone to my ear. I went back to unpack my suitcase while I waited for her to respond. After a few beeps, Mum's soft voice sounded on the other end of the phone. "Amelia, have you settled in yet?” Mum's inquisitive voice rang on the phone. "Yes, Mum, I'm already unpacking my things. If only you could see how wonderful this house is. I still can't believe I'm going to live in a house and not a dormitory." I smiled at the thought. "Amelia of course, it’s a prestigious college. You studied and worked hard to get in. Have you figured out who your roommates are yet?" Mom's voice became concerned. "No one has arrived yet. It's only Friday, and the whole weekend is still ahead," I suggested as I put the clothes in the wardrobe with a nice fold. "Don't forget it's dangerous to walk the streets late," Mum reminded me of the golden rule. "Of course, I don't want to be kidnapped." I shook my head and smiled broadly. My mother was terrified and worried that I would be living in a town with no familiar people around. It’s like she believes there is a maniac killer who wants to kidnap me around every corner. Probably every mother worries about her daughter like that but she doesn't know all the sins I've committed, so it's better to agree with her. "I'm glad you finally made it. Once again, a happy new beginning. Be sure to call after the first day of lectures. I want to know your opinion on if this college is that good." I could hear a tinge of doubt in Mum's voice. "Don't worry, Mum. Everything will be fine." I smiled as I pulled the other suitcase away. "Dad sends his regards. He asked if you crashed the car?" I could guarantee that Mum was smiling. "Tell him the car is fine." I laughed as I tugged at my clothes. Finally, I finished unloading some of my belongings so I put the suitcases in the corner of the room, still not knowing a better place for them. I sat down on the bed to stretch my back after the long hours of driving and my eyes drifted towards the bright ceiling of the room. A small smile shone on my face, and I was delighted. Life is going better than I imagined. "It's about time for me to go, mum. I want to see the rest of the house." I smiled as I said goodbye to my mother. "Of course, dear, I'll call you tomorrow." Mum hung up, and there was a beep on the other end of the phone. I put my phone next to me. My thoughts were drifting somewhere between back home and here. I hope my family won’t worry too much about me. I will miss my little sister Bree tremendously. Even though she is only four, she’s the brightest person that has ever walked this earth. After all, I'm an old woman in my twenties, soon to be twenty-one. Well, a month away, of course, but it's time to move on to adult life. I'm proud of myself for being able to work in my mum's shop over the summer. Thanks to her, I saved enough money for my first year at college, although I will find a job and work after my lectures. Money has never hurt anyone, as I think. It is better to have it than not. The doorbell rang in my ears and I’m sure I closed the front door firmly. It's probably the new people who will be my new friends, or enemies. With a quick movement, I rolled out of bed and took a few steps towards the exit of my room. I hurriedly walked down the stairs to see the first person who would be the new inhabitant of this house. I could feel the smile never leaving my face. Don't get me wrong, I'm damn happy. I don't think the smile will leave my face for the first few weeks before I have to start my education in earnest. The last step has reached my feet. Two more footsteps and my hand reached for the door handle, pulling it lightly towards me. My eyes went to the man standing in front of me. The first thing that made my forehead wrinkle was his outfit. Even though it was pouring rain outside the window, he wore only a white t-shirt that showed off his tattooed arms with black ripped jeans showing off his athletic figure. I lifted my eyes higher up to the man's face and thought looking into his dark blue eyes was strange. His face's sharp features and beard, which were very neatly shaped, gave him a few more years than he looked; only, he was probably twenty-five, maybe twenty-six. Raindrops dripped from his short black hair. His prominent jawline added a touch of masculinity and maturity, even though he was only a student. His fingers were adorned with several massive rings and in them, he held a dark brown folder. "Hello, I'm Amelia. Please, come in. We'll probably be new roommates." I opened the door wider to make a place to enter the house. "Nice to meet you, Amelia. I'm the principal of Barewood College, Issac. I'm here to collect the paperwork you were supposed to sign." A small smile appeared on Issac's face. Principal? So young? How stupid of me, I felt a blush rise to my cheeks.
