Chapter 1 - Catching her scent
Adam’s POV "Come in". Adam responded to a knock on his office door. He knew it was his Beta, just as Kyle knew Adam would be able to sense him, but they maintained the expected level of respect needed between their Alpha and Beta ranks. It had been hard at first given they had been raised together and always close friends, but after 7 years in their respective roles, all the kinks had been smoothed out. Kyle popped his head around the door and grinned at his friend who was hunched over the desk, gripping numerous pieces of papers in his fists. Though Adam was a higher rank and, as with all alpha wolves, the stronger and faster of the pair, Kyle felt no jealousy towards him. No way would he want all the responsibility and paperwork over his Beta duties. "Good morning, Alpha Adam.". Kyle entered the room. "I have finished the early training session with the pack warriors, do you still want my attendance at today’s company event?". Adam was the CEO of an accounting firm which had been handed down from his father and his father before him. It was a tradition to hand over both pack and company duties together, so Adam received both on his 18th birthday. Honestly, it was a handful, but Adam had quite happily managed both roles for 7 years now. "Goddess yes. I haven’t been around human teenagers for a year; I still struggle around wolf teens, but at least they respect my rank. I need you by my side to keep me sane.". Adam’s head fell into his paper-clad hands. Thinking about the career’s event before him filled him with a deep dread. The only way to get through it was to remind himself he wouldn’t have to do it again for another 12 months. Kyle laughed with only a trace of sympathy, "I can do that, no problem.". Adam gave him a smile of thanks. "Just give me 15 minutes to get showered and ready, then we can go.". "Be ready in 5 and I’ll get you a drive through breakfast on the way.". "Done!". Kyle shouted, bounding from the room. Adam chuckled at his friend, they were both the same age and yet, at 25, Kyle still held on to his youthful attitude. He was a good Beta though, always loyal and by his side through everything. Their RangeRover pulled into the school parking lot a little before 9am, worming around the loitering students to an empty space. Adam looked out into the sea of green uniforms, loudly working their way into the school’s entrance. His only comfort for today’s event was it was directed to the sixth formers. 16–18 year-olds were a slightly better audience than these rowdy bunch. He should know, a few years ago they did a whole school event and he vowed to never do it again. Don’t worry boss, only 6 hours to go. Kyle mind linked Adam, smirking at the dread rolling off his Alpha. Adam ignored him and got out of the car, straightening up his suit blazer before collecting his things. Kyle exited after him, joining his side, taking note of the number of students who stopped to stare at the pair. They were both used to this reaction. Being ranked werewolves gave them a commanding aura and a good physique that even most non-ranked wolves would be drawn to. Humans were helpless against their attraction. The two wolves made their way through the crowd of staring onlookers, easily towering over the students, and made their way to reception. "Adam Black and Kyle Stone, here for the career’s fair. Representing Black accounting limited.". Adam addressed the receptionist who had her back to the pair. "You are way too early...". The woman began before turning around and freezing when she saw the handsome face addressing her. She opened and closed her mouth like a goldfish, all words lost on her tongue. "Miss?". Adam’s brow furrowed in concern. "Don’t worry Becky, I can take them from here.". A woman dressed in a tight pencil skirt and blouse approached the pair. She shook Kyle’s hand quickly and firmly before turning to Adam. When she shook his hand, she moved in closer, keeping their hands clasped whilst she slowly wondered her eyes over his form. Adam’s eyebrows raised at her blunt flirting. She finally stopped and released Adam’s hand without stepping away. "I’m Rachel Evergreen. Welcome to Black Valley High School.". She purred. Kyle rolled his eyes and scoffed. It’s going to be a long day. "You’re back!" Kyle happily clapped his distressed-looking Alpha on the back. He had been setting up and standing by their company booth alone since Miss Evergreen stole Adam away soon after they arrived. He had kept busy whilst the other companies trickled into the hall. A few women had needed a hand with their equipment, and he was more than happy to oblige. Unlike his Alpha, Kyle was happy to quell his wolf’s desires with a human. Without a mate and strict rules imposed by Adam for ranked wolves not to bed non-mate she-wolves in the pack, options were limited. A lovely evening buried between one of these nice ladies' legs would be welcomed by the Beta. "Urgh, shut up.". Adam groaned, rolling the tension out of his neck. "She is relentless. Wants me to run through the presentation with her again in 15 minutes. Are you ok alone?". Kyle’s attention had wondered to a small, petite blond manning the stall opposite them. He shot her a wide grin when she glanced in his direction for the 5th time. "Yeah, man. I’ll be fine.". Adam snorted, tapping his friend on the shoulder and walking back to the dreaded woman. An hour into the event, the slow trickle of sixth formers continued to parade around the large hall. Fortunately for Kyle, accounting was not big on these student’s career lists and he could spend his time warming up to the woman opposite him. That was until the scent of an unknown wolf caught his nose. Immediately, he was alert, eyes darting around the hall to locate the wolf. Alpha, there’s a wolf here. I don’t recognise the scent. Hostile? Adam answered instantly. No, it appears to be moving around the hall with the other students. Did you know of any wolves in this school? No. Adam was quiet for a moment, keep an eye on the wolf. If things become hostile, let me know. Kyle acknowledged the order and maintained alert, following the scent around the room. His eyes landed on a woman as she rounded a stall a few down from his own. She must’ve been 18 to carry this mature wolf scent, but her soft features and short stature made her easily blend in with the other students. Her long, dark hair, as black as night, made her stand out from the rest. Its silky waves curved around her face, magnifying the gleam of her fresh, green eyes that pierced into Kyle moments after he spotted her. Kyle saw she was directly moving towards him in the crowd and analysed her straightforward approach. She must know he is a werewolf and has come to speak. He gave a silent thanks to Adam for suggesting they set up close to the doors and shifted his stance to be subtly defensive, ready to quickly remove the wolf from the room should she be hostile. The wolf smiled sweetly as their eyes locked but Kyle remained wary. "Hello," She greeted after a moment of silence fell between them. "Hi.". Kyle responded curtly. He watched her closely as she studied the stall behind him. She seemed to be sniffing the air slightly and darting her eyes around, looking for something. "Can I help you?". "Yes, I have applied to university to do accounting and would love to hear more about your company and what you do. My teacher said you offer placement years?". Kyle furrowed his brows and c****d his head at her. That wasn’t what he had expected. Maybe she was used to coming across unfamiliar wolves, perhaps she was a rogue. Whether she was or not, he needed to be sure she was safe before they exchanged pleasantries. "Are you here alone?". It was her turn to c**k her head at him. "Erm... no. My friend isn’t all that interested in accounting though, so I left her at another stall.". She gestured behind her. "No, I mean are you the only one in the school?". "Oh! I don’t know about the school, but I think I’m the only one who is looking into accounting in sixth form. Why, has your stall been quiet today?". The girl gave a little nervous laugh, clearly unsure of what to say, and tried to joke around with him. He was baffled by her answers; is she purposely being obtuse? "You should’ve bought some freebie pens or stationery like the other company reps. Secretly, that's the main attraction for most students here.". She giggled again but stopped when she saw his stoic face hand't changed. Alpha, I think you need to come and meet this she-wolf. Hostile? No, just... I can’t explain. Come and I’ll stall her for a bit. Kyle heard a grumble over the mind link but focused back on the girl. He dropped his stand-off front and awarded her a cheesy smile. "Sorry darling, I like to vet the students that come to the stall. Don't want to be handing out advice to people who only came for the sweets.". As if by magic, he pulled out a bowl of chocolates from behind the stall. The girl giggled again, and he could almost see her shoulders drop in relief now he had stopped glaring at her. "I’m Kyle. I work as an assistant for our CEO. He should be here in a minute if you want to ask your questions directly to him.". "Thank you, Kyle, I’m Lucy. Actually, my friend has just texted to go find her but I’ll be back after the talk, if that’s ok?". Lucy gave him a quick smile before heading away almost as quickly as she had arrived. Kyle cursed to himself and was about to call out, but what could he say to a young woman who had just met him without sounding like a creep? At least, she would be by later so Adam can see what he thinks. He regretfully watched her go, knowing Adam would be p****d. Adam quickly worked his way back to his Beta, claiming presentation nerves to Miss Evergreen, who was reluctant to let him leave. In a way he was happy about the interruption. He could only politely turn down a woman’s advances so many times before he would have to put her in her place. When he rounded the corner into the hall, he saw Kyle standing alone shuffling nervously on the spot. If he could shift now, his wolf would have its tail between his legs and ears flat back. Adam grumbled low in his chest; eyes locked on his Beta, who had his eyes glued to the floor in submission. He was just about to question the whereabouts of this mysterious she-wolf when the most delicious scent hit him. Adam froze, eyes immediately darkened to black as he sniffed the air. Kyle’s eyes snapped up, feeling the tension rise in the air around his alpha. "Mate.". Adam whispered, holding back the growl wanting to tear from his chest. "Oh S**t.". Kyle exclaimed.
