CHAPTER ONE
Emily’s POV Jacob and I have been in a relationship for over five years and were dubbed ‘the perfect couple’ in our university. Even though he was a famous varsity player, and I was well aware that many women admired his athletic physique, he remained faithful throughout our relationship. He was also proud of me because I excelled in academics. Today was his birthday, and I planned to give him the greatest gift he had ever wanted for a long time—my virginity. I was standing in front of his apartment door, dressed in a satin knee-length halter floral dress that defined my curves; it perfectly hugged my body and accentuated my long legs. I let my long silky hair hang down and applied light makeup highlighting my innocent face. Even my friends were shocked when they saw me, as they weren’t used to seeing me dressed this way because I typically wear shirts and jeans on a daily basis. Nevertheless, I wanted to believe them when they said I looked exquisite, as my mesmerizing mirage also astounded me in front of the mirror. Jacob didn’t know I was coming earlier than we had agreed to meet. I knew he was inside his apartment because I saw his car in the parking lot. One thing I admired about Jacob was that he knew how to treat me with respect. I grew up in a very conservative family where we valued dignity above all else. My parents also taught me that the best gift I could give to my future husband was to keep my purity until the day I walked down the aisle to tie the knot with him. However, I couldn’t wait for that day further. Marriage was still far from our minds, since we wanted our dreams to be fulfilled first. He had promised to marry me when the right time came, so I was determined to give my virginity to him today. Mustering enough courage, I made several knocks; however, he didn’t open the door. I wondered why there had been no answer from him. I grabbed the doorknob and pushed the door open; luckily, it wasn’t locked. I thought he might have forgotten to lock his door when he went out earlier. The messy living room welcomed my sight. Dirty clothes and garbage were scattered everywhere besides the stench of a rotten pizza lying on the tabletop. Empty bottles of beer and wine littered the floor as if a party had occurred all night. What was happening here? Confused, I asked myself. I knew Jacob was a highly disciplined man protecting his athletic body. He could be seen drinking alcohol, but only on rare occasions. “Maybe his friends and teammates were responsible for this mess,” I muttered while picking up the empty bottles from the floor. All my efforts in spending two hours grooming myself in front of the mirror had gone to waste because I was sweating and getting my dress stained as I began cleaning the living room. Halfway through, I noticed a piece of fabric peeking out beneath the sofa. As soon as I realized it was lace underwear, my entire body froze. Who was the owner of this sexy lingerie? My mind ran wild, and I could hear my heart beating rapidly. “Do you like it, baby?” A crisp voice came in, drawing my attention to Jacob’s bedroom door, where I heard his voice. A strong woman’s moan followed immediately, which caused my heart to pound even harder. I shook my head several times, fooling myself into thinking it wasn’t Jacob and convincing myself he had been outside, so it couldn’t possibly be him. “C’mon, Jacob baby, harder! Bring me to the highest ecstasy!” I instinctively covered my mouth to avoid bursting into a loud sob. However, my tears began to flow as I couldn’t deny that it was Jacob- the man I adored most. Finally, the truth slapped me straight, waking up my hallucination of a perfect relationship. How could a picture-perfect boyfriend have cheated on me? Though my body was trembling, I decided to dash into Jacob’s bedroom to confront them after gathering my strength. I was indeed lucky today because he forgot to lock his bedroom door. In a bit, I found myself stunned by two horrible naked humans intertwining their bodies into a deceitful lust. I wanted to yell at them but couldn’t find my voice. They were both engrossed in banging each other and didn’t notice my presence. Even if the world were to end now, I doubt they would be bothered as they were having a perfect moment. Even my loud cough didn’t catch their attention, knowing an unwanted audience witnessed their disgusting act. They were both blown away when they finally noticed me standing at the corner of the bed. The woman was the first to jump out of bed, searching for something to cover her naked body. She faced me as if nothing had happened after wearing Jacob’s shirt, which made my stomach flip. What a sick woman! The nerve of her showing defiance before my eyes! Yes, it was Felicity Keller, our university’s famous cheerleader, so there was no need to guess how their relationship started. “Babe, let me explain!” Jacob exclaimed after regaining consciousness and rattling to put on his boxer shorts. A gloomy grin flashed over my face. “You don’t have to explain, Jacob; what I’ve seen is enough, so our five-year relationship is over.” “Emily, Babe!” He tried to stop me as I approached the door, but I shoved him away with all my strength, letting him know I couldn’t be deceived. Then, I ran fast—no turning back. When I realized he couldn’t follow me, I came to a halt and loudly cried. How could he betray me? I asked myself several times. I praised myself for hiding my pain in front of them because there was no way I could let them see my defeat. Not at all! In a trance, I recalled Jacod’s attitude toward me had changed; unlike before, he wouldn’t miss a day without seeing me or making sure to call me if he had a busy schedule. Even when there were no special occasions, he often brought me a teddy bear as a gift, which nearly filled my room. Lately, he hadn’t given me any presents in over three months, which was unusual for him. Nonetheless, I ignored those signs because I assumed he was occupied with the upcoming exam and football finals. He mentioned losing his cell phone about a month ago, so I used my savings from my part-time job to buy him a new one. I was excited to see him on the football field, but all I got was a simple thank you and a kiss from him that was so brief that I barely felt his lips touch against mine; he explained he was in a hurry and left me stunned. I waited for him at my house that time, hoping he would make up for everything he missed. However, days went by without him showing up. I swallowed my pride and went to see him at his practice game. When he saw me, he even left his teammates and dragged me out of that place. His face was irritated, as if he didn’t want me to be there. Everything made sense now why he had been acting strange lately. Who could resist Felicity’s seductive beauty in the first place? Jacob had always wanted to be a part of her circle, which included famous students at our university, and I knew that from the start. Rather than returning home, my feet led me to a place where I could find relief from the pain I conceived. It was in a very remote part of our village. People were afraid to go there because it required passing through a cemetery and vast woods. They had no idea they were missing out on an opportunity to see paradise—the perfect view of vast lush greenery, an enchanting forest, and beautiful clear lake. My thoughts were so clouded that I didn’t even realize I had arrived at my favorite hidden place. If my feet hadn’t tripped over a large root, I wouldn’t have been aware of my surroundings. I rarely came here because it was too far from the city and the walk took more than two hours. I sat down under a large tree, facing the beautiful lake. It looked like a blazing fire as the sun shone over that which penetrated through the tall trees and kissed the crystal clear water. The breathtaking view was supposed to relieve my pain. But no, it didn’t alter my grievance. My heart remained sore like a torn piece squeezed by Jacob’s hand. “You’ll see how quickly I’ll forget you, Jacob!” I yelled with all my strength, and my voice echoed everywhere.
