Jade
I see his green eyes dilate and turn black as I crawl over to him, panting, too shaky to stand. “Take me quickly, before it’s too late” I whisper desperately. I feel a familiar chill as his hands run down my side, pulling me into him. He brushes his lips against my neck but pauses “Are you sure this is what you want?” “Yes - please - I need you” I beg. His fangs come out and I brace for his bite when it all goes black.. I sit up in a panic. Jolted awake by banging on my door. “Jade GET UP. You don’t want to be late to your first day at the academy!” What was that about? I’m still trying to calm my racing heart - my hand instinctively touching my neck. “JADE NOW!” My mom is losing it at the door. What time is it anyway? I check the clock and see it’s already 8 which means I’m late. VERY late . I’m supposed to check in by 9 and it’s a decent drive . “I’ll be right down —sorry!” I call back and start sprinting around getting ready. I toss my long blonde hair into a messy ponytail, noticing my blue eyes look more tired than usual. I sigh, throw on the clothes I laid out last night and book it down the stairs with my bag. I don’t have time for breakfast or a shower - great first impression. Knowing my luck, my mate is going to be there and I’m going to smell like sticky sweat from my dream. Why do werewolves have to have such a good sense of smell anyway? * Don’t worry we won’t know our mate until we turn 18 in a month - plenty of time to make a better second impression if he’s there,* my wolf Ruby says in my mind. I’m so late I grab my dad’s toast from his hand, in lieu of a proper meal. I give him a quick kiss on the cheek, mutter a goodbye through a full mouth, and sprint out to the car where my mom is already waiting for me. “That’s what you’re wearing?” She scoffs at my choice of clothing - a plain white tshirt, jeans and converses. She, as usual, is in a beautiful flowy dress that makes her look stunning. “What? I’ve never been to werewolf school before - I imagine I’ll need to be comfortable ” I say a bit too defensively - I’m still on edge about my dream and now I’m worried that I was off base on my clothing choice. I notice the aroma of fresh coffee before I see the traveller in the cup holder “Is this coffee for me?” My mom smiles “I figured I better caffeinate you so you don’t bite anyone’s head off on the first day.” I take a big gulp and smile - I’m going to miss her thoughtfulness. “Thanks mom.” She smiles back at me lovingly “I can’t believe you’re a senior already. And you’ll be 18 so soon - you might even find your mate at school! Are you nervous?” “I am.” I answer honestly. “Everyone’s going to know eachother and I’m going to be the odd one out. Tell me why I’m only going to the academy now - when most wolves go their whole lives to this school?” I still don’t get why I was at a regular human public school, even after all this time. “Oh hunny you know it’s complicated. With me not being a wolf and your father choosing to leave the pack we thought it’d be easier to give you a relatively normal childhood full of laughter and love. No alpha orders or battles or people picking on you for being from a mixed family. Maybe we could have enrolled you a little sooner, But it’s just hard to know.” She trails off. Great. Even she thinks they’re going to hate me. I roll my eyes. “Sounds like this will be a fun year for me..” I say sarcastically. I’m not so great with overly emotional moments so I figure I should shift focus. My mom cuts in “Jade Latrens you are smart, kind, strong and you learn new skills so easily - you’ll not only excel at the new classes but I’m sure you’ll find some friends along the way. Just make sure to focus on what you want” “Right mom - I’ll just visualize and all will be great”. “Exactly!!” She clearly didn’t get my sarcasm. Not feeling the need to get into it further, I sit back and sip my coffee. Before I know it we pull up to what looks like a castle in the middle of the woods. “We’re here!!” My mom squeaks.
